Beloved ‘Calamity Jan’ Actress Dies

TV Land

A treasured and well-loved actress throughout famous 1960s shows like Bonanza, The Love Boat, and Batman, this beloved Hollywood icon has tragically passed away at the age of 93.

One of the best-known heiresses and socialites reigning throughout the 50s and 60s, Dina Merrill swooped onto the stages of Hollywood, often remarked to have been a replacement for Grace Kelly in those early years of her TV and film career.

Merrill was most notable for playing country-fried villainess, Calamity Jan, in Adam West’s iconic 1960s television hit, Batman, and she made repeat appearances with several episodes centered around her character. Merrill was lucky to be able to share the screen time on Batman working alongside her then-husband, Cliff Robertson.

Outside of her successes on Batman, Merrill became an incredibly talented character actress and appeared in shows like Bonanza, The Love Boat, The Nanny and took up roles in movies such as Operation Petticoat, The Sundowners, The Courtship of Eddie’s Father, I’ll Take Sweden, Just Tell Me What You Want, Caddyshack II, and many more.

Merrill passed away on May 22nd, 2017 at her East Hampton, New York home following a long battle with dementia.

Many of us grew up watching Merrill on television and in movies and it’s such a tragedy to lose someone with impressive talents like hers.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Merrill’s family during this difficult time.
