Miranda Lambert’s Delivery Of ‘Vice’ Is An Emotional Masterpiece

NBC

The day Miranda Lambert’s 2-disc album was released, she stopped by The Tonight Show to promote it.

Fans were anticipating this album, titled The Weight of These Wings, since she first announced she was in the studio. Everyone was waiting to hear her first songs since her split from husband Blake Shelton, and she didn’t disappoint.

The first single off the album was titled “Vice.”

Fans in New York were treated to a special performance of “Vice” during her Tonight Show appearance. Lambert didn’t do much press for the album, wanting the music to speak for itself.

After Fallon so eloquently introduced her, the camera cut to Lambert, who was standing under a single spotlight wearing a black dress.  She sang the a cappella opening flawlessly. Without music backing her, she really had to portray the right emotion to kick this song off.  It’s an extremely hard thing to do, but she nails it every single time.

The sultry song certainly means a lot to her, and she was extremely nervous to release it in July.

“I’m nervous as hell,” she told Billboard in August 2016. “Now that I’m coming with a song, it does make me nervous, and I hope that people are respectful of it and understand what I’ve been doing. But I’ve never hidden anything or tried to be too mysterious. I’m pretty straightforward in my music. I always have been, and that hasn’t changed. . .I feel like the right thing to do was just come out with something really honest.”

Her live performance is just a bit different from the recording, the only notable difference really is longtime friend Gwen Sebastian’s killer voice on background vocals.

She hoped her sassy confidence, which she’s pretty much built her career on, will shine through on this tracks. She told Billboard that it “takes a lot of confidence and strength to be willing to be vulnerable.” While The Weight of These Wings wasn’t a huge success on country radio, it was critically acclaimed and highly recognized as one of the best albums of 2016.
