For days, country fans have poured out their prayers to country singer-songwriter Jamie Lynn Spears’ 8-year-old daughter, Maddie. On Sunday afternoon around 3:00 PM (February 5) Maddie suffered a terrifying ATV accident that left her submerged underwater for several minutes before help arrived.

According to a police statement obtained by People, Maddie crashed on the family property while Jamie Lynn and her husband, Jamie Watson, were watching. Maddie was only 100 yards from her parents when she turned too hard to the right and ended up crashing the ATV into a nearby pond. The statement goes on to describe the accident in harrowing detail:

The ATV and child were instantly submerged in the water right before their eyes. Within seconds the child’s mother, stepfather and other family members reached the pond, dove in and attempted to rescue the child to no avail. The child was trapped and secured by the seatbelt and the ATV’s safety netting.

Maddie had previously been reported as being in “stable but critical condition.” A rep for Jamie Lynn’s sister, Britney, shared a statement from the Spears family later on Sunday, requesting privacy and thanking everyone for the prayers.

On Monday (February 6) Britney took to social media to ask her fans to keep Maddie in their prayers. “Need all the wishes and prayers for my niece,” she wrote.

Other than that, there haven’t been many updates on Maddie’s condition over the course of the past few days. Finally, a Spears family rep shared an encouraging update through a statement issued to People on Tuesday (February 7):

With her father, mother and stepfather by her side, Maddie regained consciousness mid-day Tuesday, February 7. The 8-year-old daughter of entertainer Jamie Lynn Spears was involved in an ATV accident at a family home Sunday in Kentwood, La. Paramedics resuscitated her and she was airlifted to a local hospital. She is aware of her surroundings and recognizes those family members who have kept a round-the-clock vigil since the accident. Doctors were able to remove the ventilator today and she is awake and talking.

The statement goes on to read that Maddie will remain on oxygen for the time being. However, doctors believe she has not suffered any neurological damages as a result of the accident.

We will be sure to let you know when and if Maddie’s family releases any additional updates on her condition. In the meantime, please continue to pray for her complete recovery.
