Can’t Help Falling For Elvis

Elvis Presley is one artist whose music will always be considered timeless. Decades after his death, millions of people continue to remember “The King” by playing the songs that made him famous.

One of the songs that Elvis fans will never tire of is his 1961 hit, “Can’t Help Falling in Love.”

The song was featured as one of the tracks on the Blue Hawaii soundtrack, a film in which Presley was the star.

“Can’t Help Falling in Love” topped the charts in the UK and also claimed the top spot on the U.S. Easy Listening chart for a total of six weeks. In addition, the song reached the second spot on the all-genre chart in the U.S., the Billboard Hot 100.

The Song’s Lasting Legacy

Since then, “Can’t Help Falling in Love” has been certified Platinum in the U.S. for the sale of over one million units.

Its popularity led to the recording of numerous cover versions, including the multiple chart-topping rendition by reggae band UB40.

But after all this time, Elvis’ version of “Can’t Help Falling in Love” is the tried and true favorite. The worldwide love affair with the tune all got started because of him, and because of one particular scene in his Blue Hawaii movie.

In Blue Hawaii, Elvis plays a character named Chadwick “Chad” Gates who has just finished his service in the Army. He returns home to Hawaii, where he joyfully enjoys the presence of his girlfriend, Maile Duval.

The Scene That Started It All

At one point in the film, Chad gifts Malie’s grandmother with a music box he brought back from Austria.

The music box plays a song he describes as “a European love song, but they’re the same in any language.” That song was none other than “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” which Chad then proceeded to sing.

Staring sweetly into the eyes of Malie and her grandmother, Chad serenaded both of the lovely ladies with “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” At one point he reached over and clutched Malie’s hand in his, prompting her to look up at him with complete adoration in her eyes.

You’re just as likely to fall head over heels for Elvis when you watch him sing “Can’t Help Falling in Love” in this memorable scene from Blue Hawaii. It’s about as romantic as it gets!
