After making it through the blinds, battles, and knockouts, Jake Hoot landed in the Season 17 Voice live playoffs as a member of the Top 20.

For the first time, viewers got the chance to watch Hoot and the other contestants sing live, since all of the other episodes were pre-taped. Which means that fans also got their first chance to vote for their favorite singers.

Because of this, that meant that viewers had the power to decide who would make it into the Top 13. And Hoot wanted to be one of those people.

The country singer pulled out all the stops for his performance, opting to sing a song by a country legend…Reba McEntire.

He sang her 1990 single, “You Lie.” The track was the first release off of her album Rumor Has It, and went on to become her 14th number one hit.

In all of his past performances, Hoot sang tracks that were recorded by male artists. So he gave himself a challenge by deciding to sing McEntire’s “You Lie” during the Voice live playoffs.

It was a challenge he was more than capable of conquering. His coach, Kelly Clarkson, praised him after his performance, saying that not every male country singer could step on stage and pull off the song like he did.

I think you nailed it,” she said.

Viewers also raved about Hoot’s performance on Twitter. See just a few fan reactions below.

Clarkson’s compliment carries a lot of weight, since McEntire was once Clarkson’s mother-in-law! Clarkson was married to Brandon Blackstock, the son of McEntire’s ex-husband, Narvel Blackstock.

Viewers clearly enjoyed Hoot’s performance, and every one after it, because he went on to win the show!

His cover of “You Lie” helped him get to that point. Watch his performance of the song in the video below.
