Trace Adkins‘ brand new album Something’s Going On has a little bit of everything. The album is the perfect mix of reflective songs, rowdy party tunes, and a few steamy love songs for good measure. The track “Ain’t Just the Whiskey Talkin'” is in the latter category.
Anyone who has followed Adkins for a while knows that he’s no stranger to red-hot love songs. Just a few such songs that he has recorded in the past include “One Hot Mama” and “Swing.” So when “Ain’t Just the Whiskey Talkin'” fell at his feet, it was a no-brainer for him to record it.
The song is told from a man’s point of view, as he sings to a woman that has caught his eye. He tells her how attractive she is to him, and makes sure she knows that he’s not just saying those things because he’s a bit tipsy. As he sings, “That ain’t just the whiskey talkin’. It’s my heart knowing what it’s wantin’. All of that stuff brewing up in Kentucky, don’t come close to way that you buzz me.”
Adkins explained the song’s meaning in more detail during a short series on his YouTube channel called Story Behind the Song:
“How many times have we got to the end of the night, realized that we’ve just been blabbing on and didn’t really mean what we were saying? This is a situation where the guy knows he means what he’s saying, and he has to reassure her this is the honest truth. This ain’t just the whiskey talking and I mean this.”
Adkins’ confident vocal delivery is backed up by the rollicking sound of an electric guitar and the heavy pound of drums. As you listen to this sizzlin’ new tune of Adkins’, you won’t be able to keep yourself from swaying along to the beat.
