While they may have gotten to know each other pretty well now as coaches on NBC’s The Voice, sounds like Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and Kelly Clarkson go way back!

During an appearance on the Tonight Show, Shelton shared a hilarious, unheard story about the time he and Clarkson made the Maroon 5 front-man cry on New Year’s Eve.

On New Year’s Eve back in 2012, Shelton and Clarkson attended a Maroon 5 show at the casino near the country singer’s ranch.

Even though the superstar artists made sure to get a designated driver for the occasion, they found themselves still getting pulled over by the police leaving the concert.

“On the way back from the casino to my place we got pulled over,” shared Shelton. “We had rented van and a driver, and we got pulled over by a deputy sheriff for whatever. And not that we don’t respect the police, but we knew we hadn’t done anything wrong, so you can be a little cocky, you know, at that point.”

Shelton went on to explain that he and Clarkson – a Texas native – were joking and “ribbing” on the cop, causing Levine to become increasingly worried the night would end with them behind bars.

“Adam didn’t see it that way because Adam’s from Los Angeles where you don’t talk back to the police. And in Oklahoma if you got a good point you do sometimes,” said Shelton, before continuing, “And Adam was convinced we were going to jail and he got upset.”

After finishing his hilarious story, Shelton sarcastically thanked Jimmy Fallon for bringing up the story because now he’s ”really going to get a ticket in Oklahoma.”
