The Internet was in a frenzy when country star Thomas Rhett and his wife, Lauren, announced that not only are they in the process of adopting a child from Africa, they are also expecting a baby! For the past few months, they’ve taken trips to Africa and completely fell in love with a baby there.
Right when they decided to put having a baby on hold so they could focus on the adoption, Lauren found out they were pregnant while on vacation with Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard and his wife, Hayley. Before they made a super cute announcement for the whole world to see, the couple, who have known each other since first grade, had to tell their families the good news.

Rhett’s father, singer-songwriter Rhett Akins, stopped by Taste of Country Nights and was asked how he found out about everything, and told some secrets while he was at it!
Rhett and Lauren gave Akins a picture of the child they are adopting, who was wearing a very special shirt.
“It was a picture of the kid they’re working on adopting,” he said. “So I was like, “Aw that’s cool, that’s a cool pic.’ And they go, ‘No, look at the picture!’ And I go, ‘Yeah, I see it! — What is it?’ And they go, ‘Look at the shirt!’ So I look closer and it says ‘Big sister,’ and I still didn’t get it!”
As he’s laughing telling the story, we realize he just spilled a whole can of beans by revealing that his son and daughter-in-law are adopting a baby girl! Super fans will know that Lauren is pregnant with a girl as well, making the female population in their household triple just this year!
Rhett is in for the ride of a lifetime, as he comes from a very long line of men.
“My family’s all boys. In our family everybody’s first name is either Thomas, John or James. And if you go all the way back to like 1801, every single Akins in line is a John, Thomas or James. And now they’re having two girls,” he says, adding that Rhett is hoping to incorporate a family name, but not sure it’s possible with two girls.
