Exactly one week after America’s Got Talent competitor Michael Ketterer brought judge Simon Cowell to tears, the singer returned to the famous Dolby Theater stage to perform in the Semifinals.

Ketterer first captured the hearts of America during his first round audition, where he received Cowell’s coveted Golden Buzzer, sending him straight to the live shows. Not only did he move the notoriously harsh critic with his incredible voice, he also inspired Cowell with his story.

The singer, who works as a pediatric mental health nurse at Children’s Hospital Orange County, and his wife are parents to six children – five of whom they adopted through the foster care system, including a 9-year-old son who has cerebral palsy and is wheelchair-bound.

Performing the 2010 Miley Cyrus song “When I Look At You” from the film The Last Song, Ketterer took us on an emotional journey thanks to his perfect delivery. Although it was just him and a pianist on stage, he sang big enough to fill up the entire iconic theater.

While Cyrus sang of a love interest, when Ketterer sings the lyrics, “When I look at you, I see forgiveness / I see the truth / You love me for who I am / Like the stars hold the moon / Right there where they belong / And I know I’m not alone,” you can feel it in your bones that he’s singing about his family.

Watch his incredible semifinal performance below, and tune in Wednesday night (Sept 5) to see if he advances to the finals.
