The season of 1923 has been a whirlwind, and the 5th episode is no different.

It opens with Teonna Rainwater’s storyline and follows her as she flees from the priest and two lawmen who are hunting her through Texas. If you recall, she found her wanted poster in the previous episode and was made aware that she was being followed.

In this episode, Teonna is on the run with her love interest, Pete, and her father, Runs His Horse.

As they flee, they encounter a problem: they have no water.

Pete offers to go find some. Though Runs His Horse is hesitant about him leaving, Pete insists, and he sets off in search of water, leaving them alone in the Texas plains to wait for him.

The episode bookends with Pete’s storyline, and the final sequence returns to Pete as he searches for water.

He comes across the priest and a lawman who are on the hunt for Teonna as they are grazing their horses by a small pond.

When the lawman and the priest see Pete, they begin to chase him. Pete runs for his life, but his horse is exhausted and has gone without water for too long.

Eventually, the horse collapses, and Pete quickly gets up to grab his gun as an old-fashioned Western shootout begins. The two men face each other, guns drawn.

As they fire, the screen goes black, leaving the audience wondering: Did Pete or the lawmen survive?

Spencer Dutton’s Journey Home

In this episode of 1923, Spencer Dutton finally catches a break in his journey back to Montana.

In the previous episode, Spencer had to flee for his life and jumped onto a train car. On the train, he encountered three individuals: two men and a young girl who said they required a “train tax.” After Spencer refused to be robbed, the situation escalated, resulting in him killing the two men and leaving the young girl unconscious.

He then jumped off the train in the middle of nowhere, leaving both him and the audience uncertain about his fate.

In this episode, Spencer awakens to find three guns pointed at his head.

It’s the female Marshall, Fossett, who had previously met the priest and the lawman.

Marshall Fossett suspects Spencer is a criminal on the run and demands that he return to the nearby town with her and her deputies.

One of the deputies promises Spencer that if he is truly innocent, they will buy him a train ticket to continue his journey. Spencer agrees and rides on horseback back to the town.

Once they arrive, the Marshall contacts Sheriff McDowell in Bozeman, who confirms Spencer’s identity and reveals that he is, in fact, a war hero and not a criminal.

However, during the call, Spencer makes it clear that he is returning home to exact revenge on those who killed his brother, promising a reckoning. Spencer then boards the train back to Montana. At the same time, a shot shows Sheriff McDowell hurriedly leaving his office, presumably to inform the Dutton family on their ranch that Spencer is safe and returning home.

Alexandra Faces More Turmoil On Her Journey Home

While her husband Spencer may have caught the first break on his journey home, Alexandra’s journey continues to be filled with turmoil. In the previous episode, she finally managed to board the train after being robbed. In this episode, she faces the challenge of needing to eat while on the train but having no money to buy food.

The train conductor offers her a job serving as a first-class attendant in exchange for meals, which she gladly accepts. As she serves the men and women in first class, she encounters a young British couple. They have a brief conversation in which she shares details about her British upbringing.

After the brief conversation, she approaches a man to serve him some coffee.

This man had already taken liberties with her in the past, but during this interaction, he reaches his hand up her skirt and violates her.

She responds by dumping the entire pot of coffee on his lap and then hitting him with the metal pot.

As a result, she is thrown into the train car’s jail and treated like a criminal while he goes free. Once they arrive at their destination, Alexandra is arrested by the local police, who do not believe her side of the story.

However, the young British couple she met comes forward to provide a firsthand account, which leads the officers to let her go, though they never apologize for their harsh treatment.

After that, she tries to board her next train but quickly discovers it is canceled due to the weather.

Overwhelmed by the culmination of her travels, she sits down and cries, realizing she is at a standstill with nowhere to go, very little money, and a canceled train. The young British couple offers her a place to stay with them, and only time will tell how soon she will be able to make her way to Montana.
