Carrie Underwood showed American Idol hopeful Sophia Humbert how to take her rage out on a truck following her performance of “Before He Cheats.”
Sophia Humbert, a 22-year-old singer from Arizona, bravely auditioned for American Idol by singing a Carrie Underwood song in front of Carrie herself. She took on Carrie’s 2005 breakup anthem, “Before He Cheats.”

In the audition that aired Sunday night (March 23), Humbert accompanied herself on piano as she sang her own unique rendition of the tune. While she made it her own instead of copying Underwood’s performance, the judges felt that she didn’t bring enough rage to the cover.
“I feel like a song like that … there has to be a little rage in there somewhere. Do you get angry? It has to go somewhere. You gotta dig down deep,” Carrie told Sophia. “Everybody has stress or pent up frustrations, and it has to go somewhere. One reason I love songs like that is you get to sing your way through it.”
Luke Bryan chimed in and said he had a plan to help Sophia channel her inner rage.
The American Idol judges took Sophia to a demolition site where they all had the opportunity to destroy a truck.
Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, Carrie Underwood, Ryan Seacrest, and Sophia donned safety glasses and wielded baseball bats, a key, and spray paint. Each took a turn swinging at the truck, busting the headlights, windows, and body of the vehicle.
Carrie even recreated her song lyrics by digging a key into the side of a “pretty little souped-up four-wheel drive.”
The judges voted unanimously to send Sophia through to Hollywood.
About “Before He Cheats”
“Before He Cheats” was originally written for Gretchen Wilson. After Wilson failed to record it, Carrie recorded it and released it as the third single from her debut album, Some Hearts. It charted on the Billboard Hot 100 for 64 weeks and became the first country song ever to sell more than 2 million copies digitally.
In 2008, it earned Underwood a Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance and was named the Grammys’ Best Country Song.
It has since been certified 7x platinum and is currently Carrie’s best-selling single.
