Local residents in Balasore district, India woke on July 19, 2020, with a very rare animal discovery: a yellow turtle. Asian News International (ANI) posted a communication about the turtle as well as several pictures where the turtle looks more like a lemon than like a reptile.

The turtle’s color and absence of pigmentation amazed people and the photos went viral.

According to CBS News, wildlife experts believe this yellow color is a result of an albino mutation of a common turtle.

Albinism is a congenital disorder characterized by the complete absence of pigment in the skin, hair, and eyes due to absence of an enzyme involved in the production of melanin. Albinos completely lack melanin even the eyes can appear red or pink due to the red of the retina being visible through the iris. According to Sea Turtle Camp, researchers say albinism occurs once out of every mammal 10,000 births.

However, non-mammals animals, like turtles, may not appear fully white as they can produce additional pigments in addition to melanin.

Some albino turtles have even become internet sensations as some say they look like fiery red dragons. The chances for a common turtle to be born albino depends on the turtle species. Most albino animals have a difficult life though because they often have poor eyesight and are easy for predators to spot.
