The Latest Episode Of 1923 Focuses On Alexandra As She Endures The Hardships Of Early 20th-Century Immigration

Episode three of 1923 has just been released, and it presents a devastating yet historically accurate portrayal of the 1920’s immigration system. Taylor Sheridan does not shy away from depicting this cultural era with brutal honesty.

Through the eyes of Alexandra, Spencer Dutton’s wife, viewers experience a chilling representation of the times.

If you recall, from season 1, Alexandra is separated from her new husband, Spencer. The couple met in Africa and married against the wishes of her family and society. Now, as Alexandra finds herself pregnant, she must undertake a journey on her own to reunite with Spencer in Montana.

In today’s world, a single woman traveling alone is daunting, but in the 1920s, it was on a whole new level.

In the previous episode, Alexandra was featured briefly, showing that she was pregnant and boarding a boat to America.

However, in this episode, she becomes the predominant character, with her storyline occupying about two-thirds of the viewing time.

Alexandra’s Experience At Ellis Island

The narrative closely follows her experience as she arrives at Ellis Island in New York, where she faces a rigorous immigration process.

Alexandra undergoes multiple humiliating doctor visits, during which she is asked to strip down completely. She sheds tears throughout this ordeal.

She then had to interview to access the United States. Before her interview, she encounters an Irish immigrant woman who makes it clear that Alexandra will likely only receive her immigration paper if she offers sexual favors or money to the officer. At that time, pregnant women were not allowed entry due to concerns about “more mouths to feed.”

In a powerful moment, Alexandra manages to talk her way into America, demonstrating her remarkable resilience.

She triumphantly enters the United States, only to face further challenges as a woman alone in New York.

She meets a kind man on the street who sells her a map of the United States and shares some words of wisdom. He says, “Hide your money in your shoe, keep your eyes open, and don’t wander into any empty streets, and the nicer somebody’s being, the less you can trust them.”

He hails a cab for her to Grand Central Station and sends her on her way.

The unexpected kindness continues when she arrives at Grand Central and meets a ticket seller who offers to guide her on how to stay safe during her travels. He advises her on where to go and where to avoid.

However, the episode ends on a cliffhanger, as she enters a bathroom and a suspicious-looking man follows her in. Will her luck run out, or will she find a way to save herself once again? Only time will tell.

As a series of unfortunate events unfold, Spencer finds himself in a predicament where he must transport illegal alcohol across the United States during Prohibition.

While on this journey with Luca, they encounter a police roadblock. Recognizing the danger, Spencer tries to convince Luca to abandon the alcohol and head to a train station on foot.

Did The Family Survive On The Ranch?

In the final shot of episode 2 of 1923, we see Cara Dutton firing her gun at a wolf that had snuck into the family’s home and killed a guest who was sleeping on the couch. However, it did not show if she or the wolf survived. The cliffhanger from the previous episode was resolved when it was revealed that Cara successfully killed the wolf and lived.

The feral wolf was also responsible for biting Elizabeth Strafford, Jack Dutton’s wife. After a harsh winter on the ranch and being bitten by the wolf, Elizabeth reaches her breaking point and decides she is done with ranch living. She gives Jack an ultimatum, stating that if he still wants to be her husband, he must move to Boston.

In the episode, the audience also learns that Jacob Dutton and his fellow travelers survived the night. In the previous episode, Jacob, along with Jack Dutton and his ranch hand’s family, had to spend the night in an overturned carriage in freezing temperatures.
