Longtime fans of American Idol will not hear one of the key phrases this year.
Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan won’t be telling contestants, “You’re going to Hollywood!” Instead, for the second season of the ABC reboot, hopefuls will compete in the second round of competition in Hawaii!
The first round of auditions have been completed and the judges headed to Disney Aulani Resort and Spa for the showcase round this week.
Also joining the judges, and host Ryan Seacrest, is this season’s resident mentor, country radio DJ Bobby Bones.
According to KITV, 40 contestants traveled to Hawaii to perform for the judges, and hundreds of people in the crowd, on Monday (Jan 28).
“The judges are going to talk about what they saw, who they thought was good, who they thought wasn’t. They’ll then sleep on it and in the morning they’ll make their final decision,” said showrunner Trish Kinane. “Then at the stage where the Aulani does the luau, that’s going to be our final judgment place.”
At press time, the judges had already cut the constants down to 20.
Even though he was there for work, Bryan fully embraced being in Hawaii and even said “one of the best parts” of Monday wasn’t even judging the performances, it was an interaction he had with a little girl on the beach.
In a video posted to his Instagram, the little girl taught Bryan how to say “I love singing” in sign language. It was a truly adorable moment that proved that Bryan is one of the good ones.
