Gilbert Gottfried passed away on Tuesday (April 12) after “a long illness,” according to a statement from his family.
“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried,” the statement on the comedian’s Twitter read. “In addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, friend, and father to his two young children. Although today is a sad day for all of us, please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert’s honor.”

NBC News reports that his longtime friend and publicist Glenn Schwartz has revealed that Gottfried died from Recurrent Ventricular Tachycardia due to Myotonic Dystrophy type II.
Gottfried is known for his exaggerated and shrill voice, as well as his crude humor. Despite his dirty comedy, he has voiced several characters in children’s programs such as Iago in Aladdin, Kraang Subprime in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles television show, and Digit LeBoid on the PBS Kids show Cyberchase.
Just 3 months before his death, Gottfried mourned the passing of good friends and fellow comedians Bob Saget and Louie Anderson.

Gottfried’s funeral was held on Thursday (April 14) in New York and was attended by his family, closest friends, and as comedian Jeff Ross revealed, Bob Saget’s three daughters.
Ross, who gave a eulogy at the funeral, told PEOPLE, “What was very heartwarming was seeing Bob Saget’s daughters at the service.”
After news broke that Gottfried had passed, Saget’s widow took to Instagram story to say a few words. She wrote, “Bob loved Gilbert so dearly, they had a special friendship. As he did with everyone in this photo. And sending my love to my wonderful friend Jeff as Gilbert’s loss is beyond painful for him. Thinking of Dara his amazing & strong wife right now. Much love & support to his family.”
We will keep Gottfried’s family in our prayers.
