Dolly Parton Explains Why She Refused To Perform At Super Bowl

GQ / YouTube

For years, fans have wondered why Dolly Parton declined an invitation to perform at the 2015 Super Bowl.

Headliner, Katy Perry, asked if Parton would join her for the performance, but Parton did not attend. Instead, Perry’s show continues to be remembered for an outrageous and hilarious dancer, better known as “left shark.”

Instead of performing, Parton stayed home on the Super Bowl day, but the country superstar revealed the reason in a recent GQ appearance. For the nontraditional interview, Parton went undercover online to answer fan questions on the internet. At the five minute mark in the video, Parton confirms Perry’s request.

“That is true. And I would have done it, because I love Katy Perry,” Parton admitted.

Parton went on to explain that the health of her husband, Carl Dean, prevented her from joining the pop star on stage. Parton explained:

“At the time, my husband was not doing good. He was kind of puny and I couldn’t leave him, so I couldn’t do it.”

Parton’s husband is notoriously private, and there are no recent photos or news to speak of his current health. Still, fans hope that all is well for the couple, who have been married for over 50 years.
