The History Of “Dixieland Delight” And Alabama Football

When you think of Alabama football, you might think of the song “Sweet Home Alabama,” but the school’s history with “Dixieland Delight” goes back decades!

Shortly after the song’s release in 1983, Alabama football fans adopted it as part of their game day tradition.

The school took a brief break from including the song from 2014-1018 because the students had added their own inappropriate lyrics and chants. The school brought the song back after the “Dixieland Delight Done Right” campaign, which involved a video played during the song that shared the appropriate chant.

Since then, fans of the Alabama football team have chanted their version of “Dixieland Delight” at most home games. With their twist:

“Spend my dollar (ON BEER!),
Parked in a holler ‘neath the mountain moonlight (ROLL TIDE!),
Hold her uptight (AGAINST THE WALL!),
Make a little lovin’ (ALL NIGHT!),
A little turtle dovin’ on a Mason Dixon night (“BEAT” AUBURN!),
Fits my life (AND LSU!),
oh so right (AND TENNESSEE, TOO!),
My Dixieland Delight.”

The Song’s Interesting Origin

The song, written by Ronnie Rogers, was actually inspired by a trip he took on the U.S. Route 11W in Tennessee! The song quickly climbed up the charts to #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs list and will forever be in the hearts of every Alabama fan, whether you love the football or the band.
