Before the games get started, the National Anthem is always performed. Occasionally, the performances go viral, like Fergie’s in 2018. This year, the NBA All-Star National Anthem performance gained lots of attention. But unlike Fergie’s performance, it was because it was incredible.

The NBA chose to honor the firefighters who helped fight the devastating fires in the Los Angeles area, some of whom hailed from the Bay Area.

Introducing them, the arena announcer said, “Firefighting personnel from all over North America assisted in the containment of destructive fires that ravaged the Greater Los Angeles area. Departments from around the Bay Area were a part of that extraordinary effort. Please give a hero’s welcome and show appreciation to the members of the Oakland, Alameda County, and San Francisco Fire Departments.”

He continued, “Here to present our nation’s colors are courageous members of the Los Angeles City Fire Department Honor Guard.”

At this point, the crowd erupted in cheers, thanking the first responders for all they do.

And finally, he introduced the anthem singer, “For the singing of our national anthem, from the Los Angeles Fire Department, firefighter and paramedic Dennis Rodriguez.”

Singing a cappella, Rodriguez gave the anthem a little of his personal flare, but he really stayed true to the original.
