According to Nashville plumbing experts, the arctic blast that’s coming to the state is expected to reach temperatures below freezing and it’s important to know what to do to your home so you’re not left with busted pipes and a stack of unnecessary bills.

That’s right–the intense chill can leave pipes damaged and Parthenon Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling say there are a few things you can do to prepare yourself.

Plumbers recommend your cover or insulate any outdoor pipes and faucets to prevent pipes from bursting, as well as opening your cabinets and letting your faucets drip to prevent them from freezing.

“Making sure everything is not getting wind on it,” Parthenon General Manager Brian Passons told WSMV. “They’re small things, they’re not costly, but you can do them to help save you a headache in the long run when a pipe busts inside our house or outside.”

The company warned that busted pipes can cost thousands of dollars in water damage and if it does happen to you, it’s best to know where your main water shutoff is.

Brian also notes that he and his team can come out to your home in emergency situations and make repairs to help limit the water trouble that you may have.

“It feels great to be able to help people when it’s cold,” Brian said. “We don’t wish it upon them but if something happens we want to be there when they need us.”

Some residents are planning to head out of town for the holidays during the coldest parts of the arctic blast and Parthenon HVAC specialist Ryan Slovinsky recommends you shouldn’t turn your home’s heaters off to save money.

“A lot of people turn their thermostats off to save money but when it’s this cold, you got keep them four more degrees than you’d normally keep it,” Ryan said. “Let it roll the whole time you’re out. If your unit goes down, then your pipes crack and pipes freeze. Just keep it at a set temperature that’d you’d normally keep it at.”

In addition to Parthenon General, Metro Water Services are also expected to be on standby and come to the rescue of those who need it if they have any water trouble due to their pipes freezing.
