Country-Infused Worship Song Performed By Brandon Lake For Texas Crowd

“[This song] reminds me of that Scripture … ‘The prayers of the righteous availeth much,’” said Christian artist Brandon Lake, referring to James 5:16, at a concert on July 26 in Dallas, Texas.

Continuing, Brandon said, “In my context, ‘The prayers of a cowboy availeth much.’”

It may have only been one month since he released his new album, King of Hearts — which includes his crossover platinum-certified song “Hard Fought Hallelujah,” featuring Jelly Roll — but that isn’t stopping him from sharing new material.

While on the road on the Summer Worship Nights 2025 tour with his friend, Christian artist Phil Wickham, Brandon unveiled a song titled “When A Cowboy Prays,” noting he had written it last week and that this was his first time to perform the song.

“Have you ever met an older man that … when they go to pray, it’s just like, it just hits different, you know?” Asked Brandon. “It carries a different weight.”

Expounding upon this on his second night of shows in Dallas, on July 27, Brandon stated, “You might not have a cowboy grandpa, or somethin’, but there’s just certain people out there when you hear ‘em pray, it moves mountains, you know? And it’s humble, but it’s honest.”

Dedicating the song to “all my cowboys and all my bubbas out there who God hears,” he then began picking his acoustic guitar.

Singing “When A Cowboy Prays,” he was seated by Phil Wickham, who joined in on singing the song in the final chorus.

The chorus says the following:

“When a cowboy prays, it starts raining in Oklahoma, long lost sons come home to momma, and those stubborn horses break. When a cowboy prays, with a whistle and a rumble, it’s as strong as it is humble. This whole world just ain’t the same when a cowboy prays.”

On July 30, Brandon shared a video to social media of a portion of a demo of “When A Cowboy Prays.”

“Too early to drop a new song?” wrote Brandon in the caption of the video, which shows him singing the song in a horse stable.
