Remembering Gene Hackman’s Speech In Crimson Tide
As we honor Gene Hackman’s legacy, it’s only fitting to look back on some of the most iconic moments from his long career. One that stands out for many is his patriotic speech in the 1995 film Crimson Tide.
In the film, which is loosely based on events during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, Hackman plays the commanding officer of the USS Alabama, Captain Frank Ramsey.
In one of the scenes, he gets into a heated disagreement with his executive officer (played by Denzel Washington). They argue over whether they should carry out orders to launch missiles. This leads his character to deliver a powerful speech to his crew about their responsibility as Navy members and taking leadership.
The three-minute-long monologue ends with a legendary moment as the captain and his crew members chant together, shouting “Go ‘Bama!” followed by “Roll Tide!”
