What started out as a friendly battle between Texas police departments in 2018 turned into a nationwide feud of epic proportions. Numerous videos flooding the internet of police officers from around the country showing off their lip syncing skills.
We’ve seen performances of songs that include hits from George Strait, Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake and more. But, our favorite comes from Hart County Sheriff’s Department in Hartwell, Georgia. In the video, Sheriff Mike Cleveland and Deputy Anderson chose to skip over chart-topping songs and go straight for a television classic.
Cleveland and Anderson put their lip sync skills in the spotlight with a reenactment of one of the most beloved scenes from The Andy Griffith Show. In the scene that first aired in 1961, deputy Barney Fife sits in the sheriff’s office writing a song to the tune of “Clementine,” not knowing that Sheriff Andy Taylor is listening in. Barney sings:
“In a jailhouse down in Dixie
Fightin’ crime and riskin’ life
Dwelled a sheriff and his buddy
Pistol-packing Barny Fife
Oh my darin’, oh my darin’
Oh my darin’ Barney Fife
He’s a deadly crime stopper
What a copper, Barney Fife
Then one day there came a ridin’
Two bad men to rob a bank
But Fife was tricky, a deadeye dickie
Now they’re locked up in the tank…”
Sheriff Taylor then interrupts by singing adding his own clever verse:
“Oh my Barney, oh my Barney
Had a jail and couldn’t lock it
Had one bullet for his pistol
Had to keep it in his pocket.”
In the now viral video of the epic scene’s reenactment, Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland and Deputy Anderson nail their performance while delivering a nostalgic reminder of the great television comedy of yesteryear.
