Legendary artist Tracy Chapman joined country star Luke Combs for an incredible performance of Chapman’s 1988 hit “Fast Car” during Sunday night’s Grammy Awards show.
The brightest stars in music came together tonight (Feb. 4) to celebrate the 66th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, CA. The prestigious awards show is put on by the Recording Academy, whose mission is to “recognize excellence in the recording arts and sciences, cultivate the well-being of the music community, and ensure that music remains an indelible part of our culture.”
Each year, fans are treated to a star-studded lineup of performers who take the stage to showcase some of the year’s biggest hits.
Luke Combs received a Grammy nomination for Best Country Solo Performance
Luke Combs released his rendition of “Fast Car” in 2023 after fans responded positively to him covering the song at his live shows. The song was originally written and recorded by singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman. After its release in 1988, “Fast Car” earned Chapman a total of three Grammy nominations, and she took home the award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Combs’ version of the song is set up to meet if not surpass that success. The song topped the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart after its release, and at the 2023 CMAs, took home the awards for both Single of the Year and Song of the Year.
To add to the list of accolades, “Fast Car” by Luke Combs is up for Best Country Solo Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman perform their hit song at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards
Country music powerhouse Luke Combs was the sole representation from the country genre among the lineup of performers for the 2024 Grammy Awards. Late last year, Combs’ manager Chris Kappy told Billboard:
“We would be more than excited if the opportunity arose for Tracy and Luke to perform the song together.”
That opportunity came to fruition tonight. Combs took the stage to perform the smash hit “Fast Car” with Tracy Chapman herself. According to Variety, Tracy Chapman has only performed for cameras three times since she ended her last tour in 2009.
When Luke and Tracy took the stage during the televised award ceremony, the crowd was clearly entranced by the performance, with many on their feet singing along. The stellar collaboration earned the pair a well-deserved standing ovation.
