Budweiser Clydesdales Are An Iconic Part Of The Brand’s Identity

Clydesdales have been part of Budweiser’s identity since 1933 when they were used to celebrate the end of Prohibition. They delivered the first post-Prohibition beer going from their brewery to Pestalozzi Street in St. Louis.

Budweiser is owned by Anheuser-Busch, one of the largest beer companies in the world. Its rich history is one reason it is still thriving today.

Even if you don’t drink Budweiser, you have seen its commercials featuring the iconic horses. These are always fan favorites during the Super Bowl. Their 2025 commercial was voted the public’s favorite during this year’s big game.

The 2025 “First Delivery” commercial starred Jake, a Clydesdale foal.

Jake watched as older Clydesdales were harnessed and ready to take a big beer delivery into town on the horse-drawn beer carriage. In the commercial, he was told that he was “still too little,” despite his ability to make sure a fallen keg of Budweiser made it to the delivery location.

When Are They Ready To Officially Become A Budweiser Clydesdale?

Most of the horses are raised on Grant’s Farm near St. Louis, Missouri. The stables there house around 35 horses, with about 15 foals born each year. However, the company owns 250 Clydesdales, who are kept at different stables around the country.

Clydesdales must meet very specific requirements to qualify as working Budweiser Clydesdales.

A Budweiser Clydesdale must:

  • Be a gelding (a castrated male horse) with an “even temperament”
  • Be at least four years old
  • Stand at least 18 hands (72 inches) at the withers (ridge between shoulder blades) when fully mature
  • Weigh between 1,800 and 2,300 pounds
  • Be Bay (red-brown coat with black mane and tail) in color
  • Have four white stocking feet
  • Have a blaze of white on his face

Several hitches, or teams, travel around the country for events and such, and Budweiser wants to ensure that all their Clydesdales look uniform.
