Budweiser Has Done It Again

The beloved Clydesdale horses have been a staple in the Super Bowl ad space for 47 years. Before their nearly 50-year Super Bowl run, the Clydesdales had a rich history with the Budweiser brand.

In 1933, at the end of prohibition, six Clydesdale horses were used in a marketing event organized by the Budweiser company. The horses were marched through New York to honor former governor Alfred E. Smith for his efforts against prohibition. At the end of their city walk, the horses delivered the former governor a case of Budweiser.

This event marked the first marketing campaign involving the lovable horses.

Kyle Norrington, Anheuser-Busch’s chief marketing officer, spoke about the iconic nature of horses.

Norrington said, “We hear from our fans that the Super Bowl is just not the same without the iconic Clydesdales.” The ad’s inclusion in the Super Bowl “reinforces that we’ve been delivering since 1876 and will continue for decades to come.”

The Clydesdale Horses Rank No.1

It has been ten years since a Budweiser commercial reached the number one spot in USA Today’s Ad Meter.

Each year, USA Today conducts a public poll to rank the Super Bowl commercials based on viewers’ votes.

This year, Budweiser took the No.1 spot with “First Delivery.”

The ad follows a young foal who is not old enough to make a delivery of Budweiser. The animal is obviously disappointed that he can not join the full-grown horses.

When a single barrel falls off the delivery wagon, the young foal sees his choice. He jumps the gate and slowly rolls the barrel all the way to the bar.

Before he enters the bar with his delivery, a clever line is spoken by a patron. The actor begins to tell the classic joke about a horse walking into a bar.

Suddenly, the foal walks in with his beer, and the entire room falls silent.

It’s a humorous moment at the end of a sweet story. The ad also ties back to the brand’s first marketing stunt with horses in 1933 because it shows a triumphant delivery of a single case of beer.
