Luke Combs Talks About The Time He Was Rejected From ‘The Voice’

Like many aspiring singers, Luke Combs once auditioned for The Voice in hopes of making a name for himself. However, he never had the chance to sing for the coaches because he was turned down during the audition process. But, if you ask Combs, he’s glad that’s how it unfolded.

Over the past two months, Luke Combs has been touring Australia for a series of shows. Before wrapping up this leg of his tour, he stopped by for an interview with 60 Minutes Australia. At one point, the conversation shifted to the time he was rejected by the singing competition.

Although it may come as a surprise that the eight-time Grammy nominee wasn’t selected for the show, Combs revealed the main reason behind the decision.

After receiving a denial letter, he explained that although the producers thought he was a talented singer, they ultimately felt that he didn’t fit the entertainment angle they were looking for. Basically, they thought Combs’ life story wasn’t interesting enough, despite his ability to sing.

“The letter essentially said, ‘Hey, you’re a really great singer, but this is a show and there needs to be entertainment value and we have to be able to tell a story… and you just don’t really have a story,’ ” Combs recalled.

While it was disappointing for Combs to be denied a spot on the show, he never saw it as defeat.

He mentioned that he kept the rejection letter hanging on his wall for quite some time. For Combs, it was a confirmation that he was talented enough to pursue his dream of being a country singer.

“I was okay with that,” Combs said about the reason he was rejected. “I was like, ‘Whatever, that’s great. So you’re saying I’m a pretty good singer?’ That’s all I needed to hear.”

“It wasn’t a, ‘I’m gonna show them’ thing. It wasn’t that at all,” Combs continued.“To me, the letter was validation of the things that I already thought, which was, ‘I think that I have the ability to do this.’ Getting on the show, to me, it was never about that. It was never, ‘I need to get on the show, that’ll be my big break.’ That was not the thought at the time.”

Fast forward a few years later, and Combs has definitely made a name for himself. He is arguably one of the most popular artists in modern-day country. And it turns out, he is actually very thankful that he didn’t get a shot at The Voice

“One of the best things that ever happened to me.. not getting on ‘The Voice,’ he said. “Probably saved me from a completely different path that would have not led to here. I’m thankful for sure.”

Funny enough, Luke Combs isn’t the only superstar who was denied a spot on The Voice but still went on to find massive success. His friend and fellow country star Lainey Wilson once revealed that she was rejected by the show not just once, but seven times.

It just goes to show to never give up on your dreams!
