At Wednesday (Jan. 18) night’s People’s Choice Awards, Blake Shelton became the very first country singer to take home the award for Favorite Album of the Year
He also took home the trophy for Favorite Male Country Singer, and during his acceptance speech, gave a shout out to his date, his girlfriend of over a year Gwen Stefani, and called her the “hottest date here tonight”.
“Got a lot of people to thank…All the people who voted for me: thank you so much, thank you to Warner Nashville, and my management, and thanks to the hottest date here tonight, Gwen Stefani, whose sitting out there,” he said in his acceptance speech. “I look at that category of Album of the Year and know that somewhere out there, there’s someone going, ‘I mean how did he win Album of the Year? Like, isn’t that just a country album full of stereotypical cheating, and drinking, and tailgates?’ And to that person I say, you’re damn right it is!”
It was a monumental night for the “A Guy With A Girl” singer, not only because he had never won a People’s Choice Award before, but also because he debuted a brand-new single on the stage called “Every Time I Hear That Song“.
The two-time winner caught up with Entertainment Tonight‘s Carly Steel backstage after his big win and she asked him about a very special day that is coming up.
“Valentine’s Day is coming up, do you have any plans? Are you going to surprise Gwen?” Steel ever-so-slyly asked him.
“I think she knows it’s going to be Valentine’s Day, so I can’t really surprise her with that,” he joked. “No, I’m kidding. I don’t know. I’m one of those guys that’s always last minute, like, ‘Oh dammit. It’s here, it’s here!’ Get some flowers or something. I’m not good at planning surprises when it comes to Valentine’s Day, but we’ll definitely celebrate.”
This will mark the couple’s second Valentine’s Day together. Last year, they spent the romantic holiday cozying up together at Clive Davis’ pre-Grammys Gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. They could not keep their hands off each other and even shared a seat during the star-studded event.
