In September, Carrie Underwood released her first full-length Christmas album. The record, titled My Gift, contains a mix of original songs and some covers of Christmas classics.

Underwood collaborated with Voice coach John Legend on one of the original Christmas songs, “Hallelujah.” The pair released a music video for the song shortly before Thanksgiving, and it already has over three million views.

Another one of the original Christmas songs on My Gift is “Sweet Baby Jesus.” Underwood co-wrote it with Brett James and David Garcia.

In the song, Underwood sings about the night of Jesus’ birth. She wonders if he was cold while he was laying in the manger by Mary’s side.

She goes on to speak about everything baby Jesus would one day do for mankind, singing:

Fully human, fully God.
Full of wonder and the blood.
That one day you would shed to save the world.”

In December, Underwood delivered a live performance of the song during Cracker Barrel’s Sounds of the Season holiday special.

The set was decorated with a bunch of twinkling Christmas trees and a crackling fireplace. Underwood, who wore a festive red dress, stood directly in front of the fireplace as she sang.

Even though she sang with a sense of gentleness, Underwood still poured a wealth of passion into her performance. Her faith means the world to her, and it shows through in the way she sings “Sweet Baby Jesus.”
