If you have ever heard Brandi Carlile’s song “The Joke,” you know that it takes some serious pipes to deliver something that would even consider it a decent performance.

Carlile released “The Joke” as the lead single off her sixth album By The Way, I Forgive You, and it was nominated for six Grammys including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. She took home two awards, for Best Americana Roots Song and Best Americana Roots Performance.

She also performed the song during the live broadcast, which really introduced her to a mainstream audience. At the most powerful vocal moment in the song, she had almost the entire audience on their feet praising her performance, and musicians from all genres enjoying her music.

Because of how powerful the song is, when Voice coach John Legend chose it for his Battle Round, he knew exactly which singers could do it justice – Lisa Ramey and Betsy Ade.

Lisa auditioned for The Voice last season and didn’t get any coaches to turn for her, but things were different this season after her audition of “Sex on Fire.”

Legend and Adam Levine fought for Betsy after her “Hunger” audition, but ultimately she chose the former as her coach.

The singers looked like a pair of rockstars while delivering insane harmonies during the powerful chorus. While Betsy was singing her solo, Lisa was cheering her on, and vice versa, making it that much more enjoyable as fans to watch.

Their performance earned them a standing ovation and high praise from all four coaches. In the end, Legend could only choose one singer to advance to the Knockout Rounds, and that singer was Lisa.

It’s not the end of the road for Betsy, though! Watch their full battle below to see who stole her!
