Kelly Clarkson Just Sold A Stake In Her Catalog To HarbourView Equity Partners – What Does That Mean?

Kelly Clarkson has sold a stake in her music catalog to HarbourView Equity Partners. Clarkson and HarbourView announced the acquisition in a press release issued on July 24.

HarbourView Equity Partners is an investment firm that focuses on supporting content in entertainment, sports, and media. The firm already has a stake in 70+ musical catalogs, including works from artists such as Kane Brown, Pat Benatar, and the late Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac.

HarbourView did not reveal any finincial details about their deal with Clarkson. My music is such a huge part of my journey – not just professionally, but personally,” Clarkson said. “Knowing these songs will continue to be heard and discovered by new generations means everything to me. I’m grateful to HarbourView for valuing and supporting this catalogue the way they do.

Clarkson is one of several artists, including Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan, to sell part of their catalog in recent times. In doing so, they’ve sold the rights to their songs and their royalities. But how does a singer like Kelly Clarkson actually benefit from selling a stake in their music?

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) details the reason.

When a musician sells their catalog, they are certain of the amount they will receive. Their income does not depend on the popularity of their titles over time, or on potential future crises in the music industry. The advantage for the seller is the generation of immediate income, which can be substantial depending on the popularity of the titles in the catalog being sold.”
