Music City U.S.A. proved yet again no one knows how to throw down quite like Nashville! While the 2017 CMT Awards may have come and gone, the award show left in its wake some of the funniest moments in award show history for you to look back on.
From Nashville‘s Charles Esten showing off the latest fashion trend “male romper” to Carrie Underwood attempting to take over as host, the show was one surely to be talked about for the years to come. Here are the six funniest moments from the 2017 CMT Music Awards.
1. The Opening Monologue

The opening monologue began on the set of Nashville where Esten (Deacon Claybourne) was seen jamming out with his fellow cast mates before the “President of CMT,” Darius Rucker, bursts on the scene to take him to a CMT-themed Airbnb, “CMTbnb,” all the country stars are staying at prior to the award show.
2. When Charles Esten Showed Up In A Male Romper
After returning from a commercial break, Esten returned into view hysterically wearing a male romper he claimed Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley of Florida Georgia Line told him “was in fashion.”
3. The Host Battle
Considering how many award shows there are celebrating the genre of country music, there’s bound to be some other past hosts in the audience. After Esten asked for advice from past hosts in the audience, Underwood (co-host for the CMA Awards) and Dierks Bentley (co-host of the ACM Awards) attempted to try and take over hosting.
4. Blake Shelton Presenting Social Media Superstar
Prior to presenting the award to winner Keith Urban, Blake Shelton and winner of the award the year prior made fun of the strange award:
“It used to be that country artists could get in trouble by breaking the law,” joked Shelton. “Now, you gotta worry about spelling and having opinions. Hashtag, suck it.”
5. When Ashton Kutcher Threw A Catfish On The Stage
As part of Nashville Predators’ tradition, a catfish is typically thrown on the ice for good luck. Keeping the tradition alive, That ’70s Show stars Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson threw a dead catfish on the stage prior to presenting the award of “Collaborative Video of the Year” to Urban and Underwood for “The Fighter.”
6. All The Hockey Jokes About Mike Fisher
The biggest names in country music have been coming together night after night to cheer on the Nashville Predators as they zone in on the coveted Stanley Cup. Considering her husband is the team’s captain, Underwood was at the forefront of all the jokes. Mike Fisher, Underwood’s husband, was noticeably absent from the show, prompting someone to hit the country songstress with the joke of the night.
“Where’s your ‘Mike’ now Carrie?!” was heard shouted from the audience.
The joke was in reference to a moment earlier in the night when Underwood pulled a microphone with “Host” written on it from her purse, claiming, she takes it with her “everywhere.”
