Rock Supergroup Howl Owl Howl Features Rucker Alongside Members Of R.E.M. And The Black Crowes

Howl Owl Howl is a new rock supergroup founded by three friends: Darius Rucker, of Hootie & the Blowfish; Mike Mills, of R.E.M.; and Steve Gorman, of The Black Crowes.

They announced their formation in late September, promising that curious listeners will get to hear what the band sounds like on October 31… with Halloween being a fitting day for a band called Howl Owl Howl.

Ahead of the release of their first single, “My Cologne,” we’ve had quotes from the band members discussing their approach to music and the significance of their collaboration.

“You never can explain band chemistry,” Mike said in a press release“We all like each other. And we all admire each other musically. All those things come together and if it weren’t fun, we wouldn’t be doing it.”

Further, Darius said, “I hope people listen to this and realize it’s just three old rock & roll friends that started hanging out.”

Still… what do they sound like?

Listen To “My Cologne” By Howl Owl Howl

On Friday, October 31, Howl Owl Howl released its first song.

“My Cologne” has a West coast feel, with

Lyrically, it’s a simple song about identity in a world that values consumerism.

Surprisingly, the song’s chorus gives a shoutout to one of pop music’s biggest artists, Ariana Grande, with Darius singing, “Yeah, I wanna smell like Ariana Grande, yeah, and I think she wants you to smell like me.”

Interestingly, Ariana has a fragrance called R.E.M., and another called R.E.M. Cherry Eclipse, so perhaps she really does want to smell like Howl Owl Howl’s Mike Mills of the band R.E.M., famous for songs like “Losing My Religion.”

Turns out, that was Mike Mills’ point of reference for the lyrics to the song, which he detailed in a video shared to social media, adding that he hopes Ariana likes the song that he says is “all in good fun”:

As for the band’s name, here’s a humorous look at how they arrived at Howl Owl Howl:

Something else that started popping up ahead of the release of Howl Owl Howl’s first song was that Darius Rucker began performing songs from his home that he wishes he had written.

Here, Darius can be seen performing Miranda Lambert’s “More Like Her” on a guitar gifted to him by Miranda:
