Hell-raising Gretchen Wilson is back with a wild new song paying tribute to whiskey-fueled nights. As a follow up to “Redneck Woman” over a decade later, Wilson returns to the country music scene with comeback single, “Rowdy.”
The song exudes her signature trailer-park charm backed by riotous lyrics letting the world know she’s “ready to get rowdy.” Wilson kicks off the 3-and-half-minute banger with the rebellious lyrics, “They say lightening won’t strike in the same place, but let me get behind this guitar,” giving off a bad-girl vibe similar to that of her glory days.
Co-written with former country chart-toppers turned songwriters, Trent Tomlinson and Shane Minor, the song marks the end of her semi-retirement from music two years ago. The song gives nods to her past two biggest hits, “Redneck Woman” and “Here for the Party,” creating a parallel within her past and present letting you know she’s that same girl you fell in love with back in 2004.
Wilson made her debut to country music in 2004 with her Grammy Award-winning No.1 hit “Redneck Woman.” She followed up her trailblazing premiere single with “Here for the Party” which peaked at No.3 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles. While her music was well received amongst country music fans, the country singer recalls feeling very out of place amongst her peers at the start of her career.
“I didn’t feel like I fit in. When you’re just a little ol’ trailer park, small town USA girl, you just kinda get that feeling that you ain’t supposed to be here. These people are all different from me. Everybody just seemed classier than me …” admits Wilson to Taste of Country. “You ever walked into some place where you’re supposed to have on a suit and tie, and you’re like, ‘Ooh, I don’t fit in here’? Well, that’s kinda how I felt, I think, for the first little while. It took me a while to adjust to the industry.”
With a full album in the works as well as rumors surrounding an impending tour this upcoming year, “Rowdy” gives an inside look to what is to be expected from Wilson. In a genre largely dominated by men, it’s good to see this redneck woman back in action.
