Watch The Two Artists Take Jabs At The Early Days Of Their Style
Perhaps it was Heidi Klum on Project Runway who said it best, that “in fashion, one day you’re in, and the next day, you’re out.”
Country stars may know the truth of that sentiment better than anyone, with trends in Western apparel fading faster than the sun over the horizon.
Keith Urban and Blake Shelton, who are both presently on Taylor Sheridan’s CBS reality series The Road, have seen several trends in style and fashion go in and out over the past three decades.
Taking a moment to look at some of their past looks, the two artists had each other in stitches.
“You and I have both been in Nashville since the ’90s,” began Blake, noting he and Keith both went through “some awkward phases,” or “growing pains.”
Starting by showing a photo of Keith from 1994 in which his hair is long and he’s wearing a red vest without a shirt, Blake asked for Keith to “explain” the look to him.
“Well, that’s what I looked like when I got here,” Keith said, alluding to his move from Australia. “I couldn’t, for the life of me, figure out why we couldn’t get signed.”
Asking for clarification if Keith had been trying to get a country record deal, Keith laughed and simply replied, “Yes.”
Turning to Blake’s past looks, Keith showed a photo from around the release of Blake’s 2003 album The Dreamer, which shows Blake with long, curly hair. Smiling, Keith said, “You got the Unabomber thing going on. There’s sort of a Charles Manson influence. What was going on here?”
Answering, Blake motioned to the back of his neck, and said, “What exactly was happening in this photo? Well, there was a little bit of a breeze from behind, you know?”
Keith replied, “Is it all yours?”
Blake responded, “That was my Terri Clark phase.”
Continuing, Keith said that his mother sent him a country music magazine from 2000 that had both Keith and Blake featured inside. Showing their looks from 25 years ago, Keith marveled that they were both signed onto record deals at that point.
“Is my face like two feet across?” Blake asked, looking at the photo of himself.
Looking at his own picture, Keith quipped that he looked as if he were a wax figure at Madame Tussauds, but Blake noted that Keith’s hair has remain unchanged over the past 25 years.
Pointing at the photo of Blake, Keith said, “I could go this route, maybe. Maybe perm it?”
Blake advised that Keith should “pack on 120 pounds” in an effort to see how wide he can get his face if the early Blake look was desired.
