Kevin Costner’s Passion Project Has Been Delayed Indefinitely

Kevin Costner’s passion project has been on shaky waters after a “flop” of an early release.

The fans’ responses to the film were generally mixed, with some loving it and others considering it subpar. However, the box office performance did not meet Costner or the crew’s expectations. According to Screen Rant, the film had a budget of 50 million dollars but only earned around 40 million at the box office.

The deficit might explain the delay in releasing the second film; however, there have since been legal disputes. A stunt performer from the cast of Horizon: American Saga, Chapter 2, filed a lawsuit against Kevin Costner, claiming that a sexual assault scene was not handled appropriately according to her. This unforeseen lawsuit could also be one of the reasons the film has yet to be released to the public.

The series was initially designed as 4 interconnected, epic-style movies. The second installment was intended to be released about two months after the first. While the general public has not yet seen the second installment, it premiered at international film festivals. As a result, it has received an official IMDB rating of 7.1 out of 10.

What Does This All Mean For The Future Of Horizon: An American Saga?

In short, it is unclear.

The film’s cast has spoken about the lack of release and shared their desire for the film to be shared with the mainstream audience. Actress Isabelle Fuhrman was asked if she knew anything about the film’s release.

“No, I wish. I’m in the same boat as you. I really hope that we get to see the second one. I have no clue what Kevin’s planning, but he’s probably planning something. And, yeah, no, I’m a really big fan of the second film. I think it really captures so much more of the women of that time period, and what was kind of going on for them, more so than the first one, which I feel like sets up this whole world. I really hope that people will see the second one when it comes out, and it gives us the opportunity to make the third one. But, right now, I’m starting another project, and I’m just hoping that I get that call from Kevin sometime soon. [Chuckles] It’d be great!”

According to Fuhrman’s co-star Glynn Turman, the cast and crew are frustrated by the delay themselves and want to continue. The third installment has already been partly funded and filmed, but has not been completed.

“They started filming Part 3. I don’t know if they’ve continued it. I think there was a temporary shutdown and I don’t know if they went back, but Part 2, I can’t wait to see. It’s kind of frustrating on my part, everybody’s part that’s connected, but I love Part 1 as well. I’m glad you did as well. It takes us back to old-fashioned moviemaking and watching stories and Kevin is one of the best at doing that, so my hat’s off to him. What a bold move he made.”

The bold move that Turnman was referring to is the fact that Costner has invested much of his capital into the films.

He once said in an interview that he plans to get these films made no matter what, even though he has no idea how. He said,

“I don’t know how I’m gonna make 3 right now, but I’m gonna make it.”
