Kimberly Schlapman revealed a huge secret about her marriage that she’s kept for nearly two decades.
The Little Big Town member made the confession while co-hosting TODAY with Jenna & Friends.
During her appearance on the early morning show on Tuesday, January 28, the conversation that led to Schlapman sharing something she’s never told anyone started when Jenna Bush Hagar asked the country star if she has ever experienced a “wild night” while on vacation.
That’s when Schlapman explained that she had indeed. However, before sharing the story on live television, she had to call her parents just minutes before because even they didn’t know.
In fact, the “Girl Crush” singer admitted that only four people knew of this secret night.
“So I decided before I could say it I needed to call my mama, so I did that, like, 10 minutes ago,” she said. “And I was like, ‘Mama, is Daddy there? Can he hear me? I have to tell you something.’ And I told her, and she’s like, ‘What?’ And then finally I got more nervous and nervous, and then she started giggling.”
Schlapman then revealed that her long-kept secret was that she and her husband, Stephen, had eloped in Las Vegas six months before their official wedding with family and friends.
“Wait, your parents didn’t know that till today?” Hagar asked shocked.
“Nobody knew. No one knew,” the singer replied.
But unlike many spontaneous Vegas elopements, Schlapman said that theirs was actually planned.
“We planned that we were going to go because we were meeting some family out at the big, beautiful lake out there,” she explained.
She said her now-husband suggested the idea that they go a day early to get married.
“And I was like, ‘I’ve never done anything bad. Yes! Yes!'” she added.
Schalpman went on to say that the only person she told was her friend and bandmate Karen Fairchild. Schlapman also told her sister at the time.
“My parents found out 10 minutes ago and I’m still shaking thinking about it. But it’s nice to be free of that,” she said, also adding that even her children didn’t know.
But the decision that she and her husband made to elope has proven to be a good one. They have now been married for nearly twenty years.
“It was beautiful and wonderful and it’s worked out,” Schlapman said.
