Lady A gave us a dynamite cover of “What Christmas Means To Me” during the 14th annual CMA Country Christmas.
Hosted by Amy Grant and Trisha Yearwood, CMA Country Christmas was filmed in Nashville, Tennessee, in October and aired tonight (Dec 14) on ABC. Lady A was among the star-studded lineup for the evening. The trio was joined on stage by a crew of Santa’s dancing elves for a joy-filled performance of “What Christmas Means To Me.”
“What Christmas Means To Me”
Originally made popular by American singer/songwriter Stevie Wonder, this Christmas song has been recorded by numerous artists since it was penned in the 1960s by Allen Story, Anna Gordy Gaye, and George Gordy.
“What Christmas Means To Me” has made its way to numerous Christmas albums through the years, including Mandisa’s Christmas Joy EP, Straight No Chaser’s I’ll Have Another…Christmas Album, Pentatonix’s Christmas Is Here, and John Legend’s A Legendary Christmas.
On This Winter’s Night
Released in 2012, On This Winter’s Night was Lady A’s first full Christmas album and their fourth studio album. While they had not recorded a Christmas album prior to this one, they released a Christmas EP in 2010, and included several of the same songs on the full album.
On This Winter’s Night saw great success right out of the gate debuting at number nine on the Billboard 200 chart. This became the trio’s fourth US top-ten debut. Lady A sold 25,000 copies of the album in the first week.
This isn’t Lady A’s first rodeo when it comes to CMA Country Christmas
Lady A performed their original Christmas song, “Christmas Through Your Eyes,” on CMA Country Christmas in 2021. The trio joined forces to write this powerful song to remind listeners of the importance of family during the holidays.
“I feel like we are just so excited any chance we get to be on CMA Country Christmas,” Hillary Scott said prior to their performance. ”I think this year might be my favorite yet because the song we get to sing is a song that the three of us wrote about our kids and so it’s a real special sentimental song for us to perform.”
Charles Kelley of Lady A added:
“So, this year we’re performing a song that the three of us wrote. We’ve performed on the show so many times we just feel so honored to be called back every year, but we’re singing a song called ‘Christmas Through Your Eyes’ and we wrote this about our kids. I mean we kinda were talking about before going into write that gosh, Christmas is so much more enjoyable now that we get to kinda watch that innocence again through the eyes of our children.”
