While they were walking the red carpet for the live broadcast of the 60th Annual Grammy Awards, country quartet Little Big Town already won the prestigious award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for their song “Better Man.”
The now three-time Grammy Award winners found this out just moments before doing interviews on the red carpet, explaining their shock to E! Network’s Giuliana Rancic. “We just found out! Literally…walking to you,” they said.
When asked by Billboard which Grammy win has meant the most, Karen Fairchild responded, “They’re all sweet. These are hard to come by!”
Little Big Town debuted “Better Man” at the 50th Annual CMA Awards in November 2016 and shortly after, they revealed it was written by former country star Taylor Swift. Upon its release, the song raced up the charts, eventually hitting the number one spot on Billboard’s Country Airplay and Hot Country Songs charts.
When asked just how much this third Grammy means to them, Phillip Sweet responded, “It means everything. I don’t want to put too much on awards, but it really means a lot when your peers and the community recognizes your music.”
Sweet couldn’t finish the interview without giving the song’s writer a special shoutout.
“We’re so happy and thankful for Taylor [Swift] for sending us the song ‘Better Man.’ It’s amazing,” he said.
Rancic asked how the songwriting process was with Swift, but Fairchild admits that Swift had the full song ready to go before they even had the demo in their hands.
“We’ve known her since she was a baby,” she said. “She used to hang out in the dressing room and play video games with us. One day she emailed us and said, ‘Hey, are you guys still in the studio making a record? I’ve had this song in my back pocket that I’ve loved for a long time and I hear your harmonies on it.’ So she sent it to us and we were like, ‘Holy cow! This is a big song!'”
