The Yellowstone Universe Begins A New Chapter Sunday (March 1)
Premiering on CBS this Sunday (March 1), Marshals is set to expand the Yellowstone universe with a new chapter centered on Kayce Dutton. The series follows John Dutton’s son as he takes a decisive turn in his life, joining an elite team of U.S. Marshals.
Actor Luke Grimes is returning to the role and has hinted that several familiar faces from Yellowstone will make appearances. The spinoff also introduces its first new cast member, Logan Marshall-Green, who will play Pete Calvin, a close friend from Kayce’s military past.
Kayce appears to have taken on a new role leading a U.S. Marshals team in Montana, with his grown son Tate (Brecken Merrill) joining him. The move comes after Kayce sold the family ranch and chose to start over, following the events of Yellowstone’s season finale, which brought the Paramount Network series to a close.
Just last month, the show announced a major mixup when it announced that it would be changing its title from Y:Marshals, to just simply, Marshals. During a red carpet appearance at the time, Grimes offered some insight as to why that change has come about.
He explained that at first, the creators of the show wanted to make sure it was a Yellowstone spin-off, hence the “Y” at the beginning. But Grimes shared that once viewers see Kayce, it’s evident the series is apart of the phenomenon, and there was no reason to keep it, and Marshals alone was sufficient.
Luke Grimes Explains His Reason To Return As Kayce Dutton
Grimes and fellow castmates took to the red carpet for the show’s premiere. Grimes admitted during an interview that when he was first approached about returning to that character in Marshals, he wasn’t sure he wanted to do it.
“I didn’t think I wanted to come back to it, because I felt like Kayce’s story ended so perfectly in the first show. And I was like, well, what are we gonna do now? He’s got his dream life,” Grimes explained. “Everything he’s been fighting for, he’s gotten. He literally rode off into the sunset. And what sort of breaks that world open for him is that that dream life became no longer possible.”
The trailer for Marshals hints that Kayce may be facing a devastating loss. In one scene, he is shown visiting a grave and notably, his wife Monica (played by Kelsey Asbille) does not appear in any promo videos. Fans have been left speculating that something tragic may have happened to her.
Grimes explained that he ultimately agreed to return because the spinoff offered a compelling new direction for his character.
“That just opened up an opportunity for him to get really, really out of his comfort zone and open himself to a new world, and to new people, and to a new job, new responsibilities. And using an old skill set that we never really got to see him use,” Grimes said.
Marshals will air live on CBS at 8 PM, or you can stream the series on Paramount+.
