A California man is lucky to be alive after shooting a bear who managed to break into his home and attack him while he was sleeping.
According to authorities, the bear broke into the man’s home in Meyers, California around 10:39pm on Thursday. The man told police that the bear began to attack him so he shot it with his gun and the bear ran outside back into the wilderness.
The man then called the police to report what had just happened and that he had to shoot the bear in self-defense. Police arrived on the scene to write up a report but could not find the bear until the following morning.
“On June 25th, 2021 during the morning hours, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife located the gravely wounded bear and euthanized it,” the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a statement.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation into the matter and concluded that the incident was, indeed, an act of self-defense and the man will not be charged for shooting the bear or any wrongdoing.
The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office took this as an opportunity to warn the public to keep their food and trash away from bears, as well as, a message to locals to keep their homes securely locked so that they do not experience anything like what happened.
