Marshals Premieres On CBS

Marshals officially marks the next chapter in the Yellowstone universe, centered solely on Kayce Dutton. The series follows John Dutton’s son as he takes a decisive turn in his life, joining an elite team of U.S. Marshals.

The season’s premiere episode, “Piya Wiconi,” aired last week. The series begins after the end of Yellowstone, with Kayce and his son, Tate, trying to settle into a quiet life on the East Camp ranch.

A major bombshell is revealed immediately – as Kayce’s beloved wife, Monica, has tragically died from cancer. The episode later reveals that the illness may have been related to toxins dumped by a mine on the Broken Rock Reservation. We learn that this loss has deeply affected Kayce in a profound way as he admits to how her death has gravely impacted his life.

He agrees to join the Marshals team, giving him a renewed sense of purpose. Kayce later visits Monica’s memorial, promising his late wife that he will begin to try again.

“You always told me to fight for the life I want, but I had the life I wanted. It was with you. I’m changing paths, going to try and find a new beginning for me and Tate.”

He’s seen in the final episode wearing a Marshals badge on his belt, setting the tone for the remainder of the season.

Episode 2 – “Zone of Death”

The second episode starts right off with a touching moment between Kayce and Tate bonding in the mountains, finally strengthening the relationship they long missed. Tate asks if Kayce is ready to join the U.S. Marshals team, assuring him that a fresh start could be good for both of them.

At the local watering hole, the Bullet ’n Barrel Saloon, Cal swaps war stories with fellow Marshals team members. Andrea worries Cal’s friendship with Kayce could affect the team, but the group ultimately toasts to a “new team, new dynamic.”

Kayce wastes no time proving he belongs when he arrives at Marshals HQ, quickly turning heads during a target practice session that reminds everyone exactly why he was recruited. Afterward, Cal introduces him to the team before leaving Kayce to settle in with his new partners.

Not everyone is thrilled about the newest addition to the U.S. Marshals, though. Chief U.S. Marshal Harry Gifford (Brett Cullen) openly questions the decision, arguing that a Dutton wearing a Marshal’s badge doesn’t sit right. Especially given Kayce’s ties to two of Montana’s most haunting mysteries: the death of John Dutton and the disappearance of Jamie Dutton.

Cal brushes off the criticism, insisting Kayce’s Navy SEAL background makes him a major asset. What starts as an easy first day quickly spirals into action when Cal gets word that fugitive Raul Garza of the 406 Royals is hiding out in a trailer park in Belgrade. The Marshals move in fast, splitting into teams as Cal leads Belle and Cruz through the front while Kayce and Miles circle around the back.

Inside, chaos erupts as Belle and Cruz wrestle Garza into custody. But Kayce’s instincts kick in when he spots a suspicious man idling in a Chevy pickup across the street, engine revving like he’s ready for trouble. Cal quickly shuts it down, warning Kayce that they’re “in Montana, not a war zone.”

Back at HQ, the case takes a darker turn when Belle reveals Garza’s accomplice, Lenny Nelson, has ties to the Aryan Brotherhood of Idaho. Before the team can dig deeper, Kayce gets an urgent call – something’s happening at East Camp. Without hesitation, Cal decides to ride out with him.

Cruz reveals that there was a fentanyl deal going on between the Aryans and the Royals at a spot just over the Wyoming border called the “Zone of Death.” Fans of Yellowstone will immediately recognize the “Zone of Death” as the infamous “Train Station” where the Duttons once made bodies disappear. Even the name rattles Kayce, though he insists he’s never heard of it.

As the Marshals prepare for action, personal stories unfold. Belle finds a moment of normalcy with a surprise visit from her husband and son, while Cruz gently pushes Kayce on the painful subject of his missing brother.

Once on site, the team executes a measured plan: Belle places a tracker on the Royals’ vehicle while the Marshals focus on nabbing the Aryan Brotherhood members involved in the deal. They choose to delay going after the Royals themselves until later to prevent them from circulating dangerous fentanyl on the Broken Rock Reservation.

A special moment for country fans came towards the end of the show, as singer Ashley Cooke performs “Next to You” at the Bullet ‘n Barrel Saloon as Cal and Cruz discuss Kayce’s behavior. By the episode’s final scene, Kayce’s struggle is evident… he’s committed to his new role, but old shadows and Dutton family secrets won’t let him walk away.
