Kayce Dutton’s Journey Continues In Marshals
Marshals marks the next chapter in the Yellowstone universe, centered solely on Kayce Dutton. The series follows John Dutton’s son as he takes a decisive turn in his life, joining an elite team of U.S. Marshals.
During the season premiere, a major bombshell was revealed immediately – as Kayce’s beloved wife, Monica, has tragically died from cancer. The episode later reveals that the illness may have been related to toxins dumped by a mine on the Broken Rock Reservation. We learn that this loss has deeply affected Kayce in a profound way as he admits to how her death has gravely impacted his life.
He agrees to join the Marshals team, giving him a renewed sense of purpose. Kayce later visits Monica’s memorial, promising his late wife that he will begin to try again. We learned in the last episode that Monica’s legacy will indeed continue.

Monica Dutton’s Powerful Legacy Continues
Monica, portrayed by Kelsey Asbille, was previously shown in Yellowstone advocating for victims while helping search for a missing Indigenous woman and child. Marshals expands on that revelation, offering new insight into her final months.
She remained deeply involved in advocacy work up until her death. Kayce and Monica’s son, Tate, reflects on his mother’s efforts and views the Marshals’ current case as a continuation of the work she began, framing the investigation as a meaningful tribute to her life.

Episode 6, “Out Of The Shadows,” Recap
On Sunday (April 5), Episode 6, “Out of the Shadows,” aired, continuing the investigation into the disappearance of Indigenous girls from the Broken Rock Reservation. Following the failed raid in Episode 5, tensions remain high within the team. Particularly between Kayce and Miles, who clash over Kayce’s earlier decision to let one victim go in hopes of saving others.
With Broken Rock’s annual memorial ceremony looming, Kayce is running out of time, and he knows it. As the case progresses, new intelligence links the trafficking operation to the Iron Sentinels, a violent motorcycle gang. The Marshals launch an undercover infiltration led by Belle Skinner (played by Arielle Kebbel). Frustrated with waiting, Kayce goes off-script, torching their motorcycles to flush the Sentinels out.
The distraction gives the team just enough time to pull critical data from a gang member’s phone, leading them to an upcoming rally where the missing girls are likely being held. The mission quickly erupts into a shootout, though the team ultimately regains control, uncovering hidden drugs and successfully locating the missing girls.

Later on in the episode, a flashback revisits Monica’s final days, as tension between Kayce and Tate continues to mount. Tate remains focused on honoring his mother’s memory. He even finds himself sleeping in front of her headstone at East Camp from time to time, as if staying close to her is the only way to quiet the guilt he can’t shake.
Kayce, however, is struggling to fully process and express his grief, leading Tate to believe that he is trying to move on.

The episode closes with a major crossover moment for longtime Yellowstone fans, as Felix Long (Monica’s grandfather from the original series) makes a surprise appearance during a remembrance ceremony in her honor.
