British actor Julian Sands, known for his roles in popular shows like 24 and movies like A Room with a View and Arachnophobia, has been reported missing while hiking in the Mt. Baldy area of California.
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Sands was reported missing at 7:30 pm on January 13th.
Search and rescue crews were immediately deployed to the mountain, but due to severe weather conditions, including an avalanche threat, the search efforts had to be suspended.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has warned hikers about visiting Mt. Baldy, where high winds and ice continue to make conditions dangerous.
In a recent Facebook post, the agency reported that over the last four weeks, search and rescue teams have responded to 14 rescue missions on Mt. Baldy and in the surrounding area.
Unfortunately, two hikers did not survive after falling and injuring themselves during these rescue missions.
The recent storms that brought snow and ice to the area have made conditions even more dangerous for hikers, even those with a high level of experience.
In a post on Facebook San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said that over the last four weeks, search and rescue teams have responded to 14 rescue missions on Mt. Baldy and in the surrounding area.
“These rescue missions have been for lost, stranded and/or injured hikers. Unfortunately, during these past 4 weeks, two hikers did not survive after falling and injuring themselves,” the post said. “The recent storms that brought the snow and ice conditions are not favorable for hikers, even those that feel they have a high level of experience.”
Despite the difficult conditions, officials are continuing to use drones to search for Sands, but resources are limited due to the weather on Mt. Baldy.
CNN has reached out to representatives for Sands for comment but has not yet received a response. Sands’s other credits include films like The Killing Fields and Leaving Las Vegas and TV shows like Smallville. One of his most recent credits included a recurring role in Netflix’s television series What/If.
The situation is ongoing and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is urging hikers to stay away from Mt. Baldy until the weather improves and it’s safe to hike again.
The thoughts and prayers of many go out to Sands and his loved ones as they hope for a safe return.
