After suffering a massive stroke in 2013, it was unknown if Randy Travis would ever be able to sing again. Through physical therapy, he slowly became able to walk short distances. Later, he re-learned how to write and play guitar.
During those years, Travis also worked on recovering his voice. In what can only be described as a miracle, he was able to sing publicly for the first time at a private funeral in February 2016. Months later, he stunned everyone at his Country Music Hall of Fame induction on October 16, when he sang part of “Amazing Grace.”
As one of the greatest legends in country history, everyone figured the CMA would honor Travis at the ceremony on November 2. But no one was anticipating the CMAs’ announcement that Travis would perform.
Once the CMA said that Travis would be singing during the show, fans couldn’t stop talking about what was sure to be another miracle performance…and it was.
It turns out that Travis had a huge role in the mega medley opening performance. At the end, Travis came out on stage and joined a whole batch of today’s biggest stars and country legends to sing his beloved song, “Forever and Ever, Amen.”
While everyone else sang, Travis stood by smiling as Underwood and Paisley congratulated him on his Hall of Fame induction. Then, in a beautiful conclusion to the amazing medley, Travis sang the final line of his own song.
