Rascal Flatts Delivers Chilling “Mary, Did You Know?” Performance

ABC/Richard Harbaugh

The country trio takes the stage with a haunting rendition of “Mary Did You Know” during the 2010 CMA Country Christmas Special.

With just microphones and a simple piano melody, Rascal Flatts open the song with a powerful note by Jay DeMarcus followed by Joe Don Rooney delivering an amazing second verse. Gary LeVox bursts in with the third verse and huge vocals coming from all three. The performance is a striking example of exactly why these three have achieved so much success, fanfare, and acclaim throughout their nearly twenty-year career.

The three performers originally formed the group in 1999 and, since inception, have released nine studio albums, 35 singles, and amassed a dozen No. 1 hits with some songs even crossing genres.

The three have strong Christian roots and have ties to other well-known Christian music artists. With the astounding success of “Mary Did You Know” during its debut, it seemed like a very fitting choice for a country Christmas performance by the band.

Originally released in 1991 and recorded by famed Christian singer Michael English, “Mary Did You Know” has been covered by many country musicians over the years. Kenny Rogers, Wynonna Judd, Reba McEntire, and even Pentatonix have performed and recorded the beautiful song.

Rascal Flatts’ version is a wonderful variation of the traditional choral sound and highlights each of the band members unique skills as a vocalist.
