Shenandoah And Nickelback Release An Animated Reimagining Of The Music Video For “The Church On Cumberland Road”
A lot has changed in 36 years, but a No. 1 song is forever.
Back in 1989, the country band Shenandoah released its second album, The Road Not Taken, which went on to have three No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.
Among those hits was “The Church on Cumberland Road,” which had a humorous music video depicting the band struggling to get to a church in time for its frontman, Marty Raybon, to get married.
Now, the song has been re-recorded, and it features Nickelback.
Similarly, the original 1989 music video has also been recreated as an animated music video.
Watch The New Music Video, And Compare It To The 1989 Version
The 1989 music video for “The Church on Cumberland Road” begins with the camera tilting down to reveal a road as a red truck passes by. Filled with the members of Shenandoah, lead singer Marty Raybon is seated in the middle of the front seat, and he reaches for a cassette to play… but the tape has come loose.
In the 2025 version of the music video, which was animated by Cartuna, the lead singer of Nickelback, Chad Kroeger, is seated beside Raybon in the truck. This time, instead of reaching for a cassette, he pulls out his iPhone… but the battery promptly dies.
From there, the new animated music video follows many of the same dramatic beats as the 1989 original, showing the bride-to-be waiting for the arrival of the groom, and all the high jinks they get into along the way (flat tire and all).
Here’s the 1989 version:
Sharing the new music video on its social media, Shenandoah prefaced the new version of the song with Nickelback, saying, “Two worlds collide.”
The new music video even ends with a classic Nickelback moment, alluding to the “look at this photograph” lyric from the 2005 song “Photograph.”
