The talented young singer opted to cover a Tammy Wynette song during this crucial time in the competition. She chose “‘Til I Can Make It on My Own.”
Wynette co-wrote “‘Til I Can Make It on my Own” with George Richey and Billy Sherrill. She released the song in 1976, and it reached #1 on the Hot Country Songs chart.
When speaking about the song in rehearsals, West said:
“It means a lot to be performing a Tammy Wynette song on Blake’s last team ever as his last country artist ever. It’s such a monumental moment. So I really want to make Blake proud.”
Grace West Impresses Voice Coaches With Her Semi-Finals Performance
West did make Shelton proud. Her beautiful performance wowed him and all of the other coaches.
Niall Horan complimented West, saying, “Your tone is so unique, but also, I feel like I’ve heard it in lots of different places. It’s amazing.”
Shelton said it was “unbelievable” that West performed the song just like she did in rehearsals. He praised her for choosing to cover “‘Til I Can Make it On My Own,” since no one else has ever dared to do so before:
“There’s a reason that no one has ever done that song on this show,” he said. “It’s because you can’t do it, but you just did. I’ve got to tell you, I will be stunned if you don’t make it into the finale. Not because of any other reason than you are absolutely the real deal. To have a 19-year-old up here singing classic country music, it doesn’t get any better than that.”
It seems the viewers agreed with Shelton, because they voted to send West to the finale! Head below to watch the Wynette cover that helped her get there.
