How It Works: 2023-2024 NFL Season Data
Users of the BACtrack app, which interfaces with smartphone-compatible breathalyzers, anonymously provided data for the 2023-2024 NFL season. This dataset, comprising over 28,000 unique BAC tests, originated from U.S. users who opted into sharing.
Utilizing a map of fan allegiance created by Matt Sorenson using Twitter data, researchers pinpointed fan locations for each NFL team, enabling the association of BAC results with teams across the nation.
The data, reflecting positive BAC readings, comprised unique tests collected anonymously from 6 AM the day of each regular season game to 6 AM the following day, following each team’s specific game schedule.
A Few Observations From BACtrack’s Study
- The BAC levels of the top 5 teams reached or exceeded 0.080%—the legal threshold of impairment for safe driving.
- Despite their notorious reputation and ample evidence on social media, the Buffalo Bills didn’t make the cut.
- Interestingly, the team who won this year’s Super Bowl—the Kansas City Chiefs—occupies the top spot on the bottom 5 list.
