The Song Has Become A Highlight Of Zach Top’s Shows

“What do y’all think about a little Conway Twitty?” asked Zach Top at a show a few months ago in Knoxville, Tennessee.

To this, the crowd went wild.

However, Zach is offering more than just a cover, but rather a reimagining of a song that country icon Conway Twitty popularized in 1982 on his album Southern Comfort: “Slow Hand.”

One year earlier, in 1981, the soul group the Pointer Sisters released the original version of “Slow Hand,” but Zach’s rendition of the song — which has become a staple of sorts at his live shows on the Cold Beer & Country Music Tour — offers something musically that neither the Pointer Sisters or Conway Twitty arrived at.

“Stiggy, I don’t remember there being any saxophone on that record though,” quipped Zach as he looked to his bandmate Ryan “Stiggy” Stigmon, who was preparing to play saxophone.

The addition of saxophone to “Slow Hand” is surprising, but fitting.

Looking to the moody lyrics of the song, the sax is an appropriate inclusion, and one that compliments Zach’s gentle electric guitar, as the song goes:

“Moon shadowed ground with no one around, and a blanket of stars in our eyes. Hey, we’re drifting free like two losties on the crazy wind of the night. Darling don’t say a word I’ve already heard what your body is saying to mine. If you want all night, you know it’s alright. I’ve got time.”

Then, the chorus states, “You’ve got a man with a slow hand. You’ve got a lover with an easy touch. You’ve got somebody who will spend some time, not come and go in a heated rush. Baby, believe me, I understand. When it comes to love you want a slow hand.”
