“In mid-1972 I finally realized that things were not going to change – and that we had separate lives completely,” Priscilla states simply that she had to face the fact that Elvis is what Elvis is, and she is as she is. Would she continue to put up with it? Her answer was no.

This was a quote from the August 1973 issue of Ladies’ Home Journal…the first-ever interview granted by Priscilla Presley just shortly after she and Elvis began their 18-month separation that ultimately led to their official divorce.

An astute young reporter by the name of Sandra Shevey happened to catch the estranged wife at the right time. According to her, Priscilla had been rejecting every single person to inquire about an interview…until Shevey showed up at the apartment door to Priscilla’s penthouse in Marina Del Rey.

At this point in time, Priscilla had been seeing the man she held an affair with – and who was also her karate instructor – for some time. Elvis lived in the home that they once shared in Holmby Hills. She then moved into the five-bedroom penthouse apartment in Marina Del Ray where Shevey found her.

The interview is a snippet of audio from the full-featured magazine print from the 1973 issue – an article that Priscilla had editorial review over…something that’s rare in journalism.
